Pomegranate (Punica granatum)

Hardy, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub
Description: Showy, bright orange-red flowers in late spring followed by edible fruits.
Habit: Grows to 12 feet high and 10 feet wide.
Culture: Prefers partial to full sun and well-drained soil
Hardiness: Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7b

This shrub to small tree is native from southern Europe to northern India but has naturalized in the Mediterranean. In his Garden Book Thomas Jefferson documented a row of pomegranates that were planted in the south slope of Monticello in 1769. Although they can reliably flower in Virginia, fruit is rare. Pomegranates prefer climates with long, hot dry summers. They are well suited to container growing.

Arrives in a 1 gallon pot.
