Bare Root European or Common Larch (Larix decidua)

Plant type: deciduous, coniferous tree
Description: Medium to fine-texture leaves, bright green in spring, becoming a deeper green in summer, finally turning a spectacular ocher yellow in autumn
Habit: Reaches 70 to 75 feet in height, 25 to 30 feet wide, grows medium to fast, pyramidal in form
Culture: Prefers sunny location and moist, well-drained soil.  Intolerant of shade, dry, shallow, chalky soils and pollution
Hardiness: USDA Zones 2 through 7

Larix decidua is native to the mountains of central Europe from southeastern France through the main chain of the Alps eastward to Vienna, forming beautiful forests. Introduced very early into this country, Thomas Jefferson planted European Larch on the grounds at Monticello.  He noted on April 2, 1812 "planted in the old boxes No. 3 Silver Fir. 7. Scotch Fir. 12. Larix. 13. Cedar of Lebanon."

This plant will ship bare root.  Approximately 12-24" tall.

Bare root planting tips:

~ If you can't plant immediately, store your plant in a cool location and keep the roots moist or pot in a container with a nursery potting mix from your local garden center.

~ Before planting, let the roots soak for several hours as you prepare the site. You'll want to dig a large enough hole so the root mass can spread out and the plant is at the same soil level as when it was growing in the nursery.

~ Once planted, water it in well and wait a month before fertilizing. Mulching will help to maintain moisture and raise soil temperatures for faster growth.
